BUSINESS LICENSE TAX


WHEN DO I GET A BUSINESS TAX CERTIFICATE (LICENSE)?
You are required to obtain a business tax certificate (license) before conducting any business, trade, profession, enterprise, establishment or occupation – even if your business is located outside of the city limits or you have a business tax certificate (license) from another city.

MORE THAN ONE BUSINESS
If you own more than one business you will need to obtain a business tax certificate (license) for each location and for each type of business. Contact the Business Tax Division for further information.

DO I NEED TO HAVE A PHYSICAL ADDRESS BEFORE APPLYING FOR A BUSINESS LICENSE?
Before going to any public agency you should have an exact address for the proposed business. Having an accurate site location is crucial for receiving the correct zoning information and for filing various documents and permits. Private mailbox addresses are for mailing purposes only and cannot be used as a business address.

DO I NEED TO COME IN PERSON TO APPLY?
If your business is physically located in the city limits of Camarillo please apply in person. If your business is located outside the city limits, your license can be processed by mail.

ZONE CLEARANCE
Every business located in a commercial location within the City of Camarillo must acquire a zone clearance from the Community Development Department to see if the building you intend to occupy is suitable for your type of business. Any questions regarding the zone clearance process (Business Occupancy Zoning Inspection) should be directed to the Community Development Department at (805) 388-5360.

INDUSTRIAL WASTE WATER DISCHARGE PERMIT
A business that prepares food, provides automotive repair service, laundry services, or any business that generates industrial wastewater may need this permit. Please contact Camarillo Sanitary District for additional information (805) 388-5332.

SIGNS
Check with the Community Development Department before using or installing any type of permanent or temporary sign; including those on walls, windows, banners, and captive balloons.

LIVE ENTERTAINMENT PERMIT
Any business allowing on site live entertainment (karaoke, bands, piano players, guitarists) is required to have an approved Live Entertainment Permit. Contact the Business Tax Division.

MASSAGE
Contact the City of Camarillo, Business Tax Division (805) 388-5330 for regulations.

1. Business Owners of Massage Establishments (including foot massage), Fitness Centers, Professional Offices (Chiropractors, Acupuncture, Acupressure, etc.), and Country Clubs must *comply with Chapter 5.16 of the Camarillo Municipal Code if:
  • The business owner permits massage therapists or massage practitioners to work or provide services whether as independent contractors or as employees at their place of business.
  • *Non profit organizations are exempt from City business licenses. However, if the organization utilizes massage therapists and/or practitioners as independent contractors at their facility, the therapist and/or practitioner must be CAMTC certified and licensed with the City.
2. Massage Therapists and Practitioners are required to obtain California Massage Therapy Council (CAMTC) Certification in order to provide services in the City of Camarillo as an employee or as an independent contractor.


SPECIAL EVENT / FILMING PERMITS
Sponsors of Special Events are required to pay a special event tax, contact the Business Tax Division. Special Event and Filming Permits are processed by the Community Development Department.

TAXICAB OWNER / DRIVER PERMITS
Taxicab companies and independent drivers offering taxicab services in the City of Camarillo contact the Business Tax Division for more information.

RENTAL OF INFLATABLE DEVICES
If you are in the business of renting out jolly jumpers or inflatable devices in a park, you must be pre-approved by Pleasant Valley Recreation & Park District (805) 482-1996.

SOLICITORS / PEDDLERS / DISTRIBUTING ADVERTISING MATERIAL
If you are soliciting business, peddling items door to door, distributing advertising material in a commercial or in a residential zone of the City of Camarillo, you will be required to obtain a Solicitor’s Permit. Contact the Business Tax Division for further information.

SOLICITORS / PEDDLERS - NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS
All nonprofit organizations should register with the City of Camarillo. Proof of nonprofit status from State and Federal government must be submitted. Contact City Clerk’s Office for further information.

TRANSIENT OCCUPANCY TAX (TOT) INFORMATION
For Hotel / Motel Operators that collect, report and pay transient Occupancy Tax on Room Rent contact the Business Tax Division.

HOME OCCUPATION PERMIT
Persons using their home as a business address in the city limits of Camarillo must also obtain a Home Occupation Permit from the City of Camarillo, Community Development Department. For Home Occupation Permit Applications or Rules & Regulation Questions contact the Community Development Department.

SECOND HAND DEALER / PAWN SHOP PERMITS
